Balansoarul/The Rocker

Întîmplarea de azi m-a făcut să-mi schimb tema postării. Doream să vă povestesc despre acea rară calitate care se cheamă naturalețea, și pe care,  azi, o mai găsim cu greu în jurul nostru, atît în aspectul fizic, obiecte, dar mai ales în oameni. Aflată într-o perioadă pe care nu o pot caracteriza decît ciudată, mă trezesc și prima imagine care-mi apare pe timeline-ul de facebook este o poză înfățișîndu-l pe Leonard Cohen cu copiii săi, Adam și Lorca, în brațe, cu o pisică neagră, stînd toți pe un balansoar. Poza o știu demult și o îndrăgesc pentru exact acest aspect al naturaleții care se citește, un tată fără nici un aer de vedetă ce-și ține în brațe copiii, citindu-le dintr-o carte. Perfecta normalitate a unei vieți obișnuite. Azi remarc ceva ce nu văzusem pînă atunci. Că stau toți într-un balansoar identic cu al meu din atelier. Postînd poza, prietenii mei comentează și astfel, mai aflu și că e o piesă de mobilier valoroasă ce poartă numele de Thonet. Habar n-aveam. Sunt fană adevărată Leonard Cohen de zeci de ani, asta trebuie specificat.

What happened today made me change the subject of this blog post. Initially, I wanted to tell you about the rare quality named naturalness which we hardly find around us these days, both within physical aspect, in objects, but especially in people. Since I’m in a time which I can’t describe as being anything other than odd, I usually wake up and the first photo I find on my Facebook Timeline is one of Leonard Cohen holding his children, Adam and Lorca, with a black cat, all of them sitting on a rocker. I’ve seen that photo many times before and I’m fond of it for having this specific natural appearance of a dad showing no celebrity attitude, but holding his kids on his lap and reading for them from a book. The absolute and perfect normalcy of ordinary life. Today, I couldn’t help but notice they they’re all sitting in a rock chair which is identical to the one I have in my studio. After posting the picture, my friends left comments so that they let me know that specific rocking chair is a valuable piece of furniture named Thonet. I honestly had no idea of this. I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, that is a must to say.

Mama lui Andrei/ Andrew's Mother

Apoi, tot stînd și meditînd la chestiune îmi zic că treaba cu coincidențele sau sincronicitățile, nu e așa de banală ca să nu mă aplec deasupra ei. În timp ce caut referințe despre asta, îmi amintesc o întîmplare ciudată de pe vremea cînd eram studentă și lucram, într-o vară, pentru sesiune. Tîrziu, în noapte, prezentatorul spune: ” Și-acum o dedicație pentru mama lui Andrei, a cărei zi de naștere este azi!” După care continuă, pe un ton agresiv, asemănător cu stilul unei înjurături: ”Mama lui!” Eu, complet siderată, mă uimesc cum poate să facă așa ceva pe un post public de radio și mă revolt, evident, singură în noapte căci nu aveam ce măsuri să iau. Peste vreo cîteva zile, în autobuz cu soțul meu( pe-atunci nu eram căsătoriți), înghesuială, vară, căldură, noi povesteam, eu cu vocea mea de tunet mult diminuată, dar totuși sonoră, îi povestesc întîmplarea și îmi exprim indignarea față de comportamentului tipului. Dintr-o dată, un individ se întoarce către mine surîzînd și- mi spune: ”Să știți că eu eram ăla și m-au dat afară!” Am rămas mută.

Later on, reflecting on this, I start telling myself that this thing concerning coincidences and synchronicity is not so trivial or commonplace so that I shouldn’t think more deeply of it. While looking for references on it, I remember of an unusual event since I was a student working for my practical exams. Late at night, the show host said: “And now there’s a dedication for Andrew’s mother, whose birthday is today!” And he continues in an aggressive tone, similar to the tone of cussing: “Oh, that son of a bitch!” Left completely stupefied, I started wondering how someone could do such a thing on a public radio station, so I obviously got completely mad, since there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. A few days later I was on the bus with my husband (well, we weren’t exactly married back then, but we were a couple anyway). It was during summer, so it was crowded, really hot, we were talking, so I told him this story on my hollow thunderous, but still loud voice about what had happened on the radio, while expressing my outrage at this guy’s behaviour. Suddenly, a guy turned to me laughing and told me: “You should know I am that guy and they fired me!” I was struck speechless.

Coincidențele sunt evenimente care se petrec continuu, dar sunt cei care le sesizează sau observă aceia care le acordă acest caracter neobișnuit/Coincidences are events that occur all the time, but it’s those who notice them or are aware of them who give coincidences this special, uncanny nature

S-au făcut studii serioase despre ideea coincidenței și a sincronicității care au încercat să lămurească pe baze științifice, cum altfel?  aceste evenimente care scapă minților umane dornice să clasifice, să ordoneze și să calculeze  totul. A reieșit că cei care sesizează coincidențele sunt cei care au o aplecare evidentă către  zona necunoscută aflată în spatele realității, că sunt persoane spirituale sau religioase. Coincidențele sunt evenimente care se petrec continuu dar sunt aceia care le sesizează sau observă cei care le acordă acest caracter neobișnuit. Trăim într-o lume, epocă și niște condiții în care tot ce ar putea ține de miracol sau de inexplicabil,  acea parte nevăzută și ne-demonstrabilă pe baze științifice nu prezintă interes. Cu toate acestea dacă ne aplecăm puțin, cu minimă conștiinciozitate asupra subiectului, realizînd că ceea ce se vede este net inferior cantitativ față de ceea ce se simte, sau mai pe scurt, realitatea fizică este doar vîrful de aisberg al unei realități imateriale, în acest caz, deci, sincronicitatea și coincidențele apar ca firești și oarecum așteptate.

We live in a world, in an age and under some circumstances under which anything that could be due to miraculous or inexplicable events – the hidden and scientifically unproven facts – are of no interest. Nevertheless, if we take a closer look at it, we are definitely able to realize that what meets the eye is way below what we can feel with our spirit. To put it in a nutshell, physical reality only represents the top of the iceberg of an immaterial reality in this case, so synchronicity and coincidences almost seem to be natural and regular. There are serious and relevant studies on the ideas of coincidence and synchronicity, which tried to clarify these concepts within scientific bases, of course. The human minds miss these events which is terrible for us humans, since all we long for is to arrange, to calculate, and basically, to control everything. So it came out that those who are aware of coincidences are those who have a mind (or it might be even called a talent) for the hidden area behind reality, these being spiritual or religious persons. Coincidences are events that occur all the time, but it’s those who notice them or are aware of them who give coincidences this special, uncanny nature.

 Carl Jung: Sincronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle

Nu aș bate apa în piuă aici fără să am argumente ale unor oameni de știință foarte valabili care s-au aplecat cu interes asupra subiectului cum este Carl Jung, care a și scris o carte pe tema aceasta ”Sincronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle. Sincronicitatile sunt acele fenomene care, prin modul lor de manifestare, dau nastere la coincidențe sau corespondențe semnificative. Aceste evenimente sunt privite deseori ca veritabile miracole, pentru că nu se pliază pe legea comună a cauzalității, ele scoțînd în evidență, de fapt, o lege mai subtilă, acauzală. Jung a fost preocupat să înțeleagă aceste suprapuneri surprinzătoare care nu își găseau demonstrația științifică și nu puteau fi explicate cu argumente raționale. În 1952, după îndelungate dezbateri și discuții, mai întîi cu Einstein în anii primului război mondial, iar mai apoi cu prietenul său, fizicianul Wolfgang Pauli, Jung publică această carte, ca o sumă a teoriilor sale și a experimentelor sale clinice.

I wouldn’t be beating a dead horse on the subject without relying on arguments found by great scientists that studied this issue more profoundly, such as Carl Jung (who also wrote a book on the subject, named: “Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle”). Synchronicities are phenomena that, through their manner of taking place, give birth to coincidences or meaningful connections. These phenomena or events, as you want to call them, are usually looked at as if they were true miracles, because they don’t respond to the common law of causality. On the contrary, they underline the power of a more important, subtle and acausal law. Jung was interested in understanding these surprising overlaps that couldn’t be scientifically proven and couldn’t be explained through rational arguments. In 1952, after endless debates and polemics, firstly with Einstein, during WWI, and afterwards with physicist Wolfgang Pauli, a friend of his, Jung published this book where we can find all of his theories and clinical trials on the subject.

Coincidența sau sincronicitatea este căptușeală tainică și extrem de prețioasă a lumii materiale și palpabile/The coincidence or syncronicity  is sort of a mystic and extremely precious padding of the physical and tangible world

Poveste lungă spusă scurt-pentru că eu nu uit, că totuși, prin meseria pe care o dețin sînt condamnată la revelarea, doar, a suprafețelor- fenomenul coincidențelor și al sincronicităților este demonstrația perfectă a unei lumi tainice  a sensurilor, care ne scapă dacă nu suntem  atenți. E un fel de căptușeală tainică și extrem de prețioasă a lumii materiale și palpabile, în care punem degetul concret pe rană, cum se zice. Mai este și un fel de promisiune care ne poate ajuta să mergem înainte, căci ne-am pierdut complet sensul miracolului din existență. Teoria sincronicității ne sugerează această lume misterioasă, acauzală, situată într-o altă ordine a realității, dincolo de cauze materiale, dincolo de spațiu și timp, acolo unde se află engramele arhetipurilor ce sunt reflectate în subconștientul colectiv, amprenta unei legături și a unei unități de care nu ne dăm seama în separarea noastră egoistă, rațională și pragmatică. Nu vă dau lecții, doar vă sugerez. 🙂

Long story short (because thanks to my profession I am doomed to only reveal surfaces or, in other words, what meets the eye), the phenomenon of coincidences and synchronicities is the perfect demonstration that there is a secret universe of those meanings that we don’t get to perceive if we don’t take a closer look. It is sort of a mystic and extremely precious padding of the physical and tangible world in which we can hit the nail on the head, as we may call it. It’s also sort of a hope that can help us move forward, since we completely forgot the notion of miracle in our lives. The theory of synchronicity suggests us that there is this acausal, mysterious world, ruled by different laws of reality, beyond physical causes, beyond space and time. It is located together with the archetype’s engrams which are reflected upon the collective unconscious, the print of a connection and a whole we do not perceive while living in our selfish, rational and pragmatic isolation. I’m not lecturing you, I’m just giving you a simple suggestion. 🙂

Vinul Serafim/ Serafim Wine

Ultima întîmplare personală legată de sincronicitate este mind-blowing și mi s-a întîmplat în primăvara anului trecut. Făcusem o obsesie pentru îngeri și citeam tot ce-mi cădea în mînă despre asta. Într-o după amiază, prin martie, la atelier vine Olimpia, o clientă de-a mea, pe care nu o mai văzusem demult și-mi aduce în dar o sticlă de vin aparte, din care se fac serii mici și personalizate, un vin românesc. Prinse cu detalii vestimentare, nu remarc eticheta sticlei, decît într-un tîrziu cînd mă uimesc peste poate și exprim asta și Olimpiei. Vinul se cheamă Serafim și pe eticheta stranie, sub niște ochii scrutători și cumva, omniprezenți se află patru elemente cheie: un domn care salută politicos, un manechin de croitorie, un pom și o mașină de cusut. Ulterior am căutat pe internet să văd despre aceste vinuri și eticheta cu pricina nu apărea. Olimpia care se ocupă cu organizarea de evenimente și participă la multe degustări de vinuri sofisticate îmi spune că e singura sticlă care a primit-o și mi-a adus-o mie. M-a asigurat că nici n-a văzut eticheta și s-a gîndit doar că vinul este foarte bun. Vă dați seama cum am încercat să-mi explic cele întîmplate și cît mi-am răsucit creierul ca să găsesc o explicație. Finalmente, m-am liniștit și m-am considerat protejată.

The last event about synchronicity that happened to me is mind-blowing and it took place last spring. I had been obsessing over angels and I would reading everything that came to my hands on the subject. One afternoon, in March, Olimpia, one of my clients, came to my studio. I hadn’t seen her for a while, so she brought me a special bottle of wine as a gift. It was one of those tiny and personalized ones, a Romanian wine. Since I was focused on fashion details I didn’t notice until later the label on the bottle, so it shocked me, which Olimpia must have noticed. The wine was called Serafim and on the unusual label there were four elements, under a pair of probing and somehow omnipresent eyes: a man politely greeting, a seamstress dummy, a tree and a sewing machine. Later on, I checked it on the internet, wanting to find out more about these wines and the label in question was nowhere to be found. Olimpia, who is an event planner and attends many sophisticated wine tasting events, told me it was the only one of that kind that she received and she had brought it to me. She assured me that she hadn’t even seen the label and she had only thought it was a really good wine. You can guess how I tried to find an explanation for what had happened and how much I’d tortured my brain trying to obtain it.

Aceasta era esența mesajului, ceea ce vă doresc și vouă la început de an, ca în pilda cu Sfîntul Augustin care voia să scrie despre Dumnezeu, să-l cuprindă într-o carte și  a avut viziunea cu micul înger copil care voia să-nghesuie marea într-o gropiță de nisip.

In the end, I found comfort in what had happened and I thought of myself as being protected. This was the message. And it is what I wish to all of you at the beginning of this year, just like in the inspirational tale of St. Augustin, who wanted to write about God, to describe him in a book and he had this vision of the little, child angel who wanted to place the water of the ocean into a small hole in the sand.
